Sydney FC lure Matildas midfielder back to Ninja A-League: ‘Footballer of the highest quality’

Sydney FC have prised CommBank Matildas midfielder Sarah Hunter back to the Ninja A-League club.

Former Sky Blues Young Player of the Year Hunter re-joins Sydney on a one-year deal ahead of the 2025-26 campaign after the 22-year-old spent the past two seasons with Paris FC in France.

During her time abroad, Hunter gained valuable international experience and made her senior Matildas debut against Canada in December 2023.

A two-time Premiership winner and Championship victory with Sydney FC, Hunter was instrumental in the club’s 2022–23 Double-winning season, earning selection in the PFA A-League Women Team of the Season and being crowned the Ninja A-League Young Footballer of the Year.

Hunter’s return bolsters Sydney FC’s push for a record-extending sixth Ninja A-League Championship, adding quality, energy, and leadership to Ante Juric’s youthful, ambitious squad.

“I’m absolutely delighted to be back in Sky Blue,” she said as the Sky Blues prepare to kick-off season 2025-26

“Sydney FC has always felt like home to me, and I can’t wait to get started again with such a talented group of players.

“The team looks really strong this season and I’m excited about what we can achieve together.

“I’ve grown a lot over the last couple of years in Europe, and I’m here to help us lift more silverware for our members and fans.”

Sydney head coach Ante Juric said: “We are extremely happy to have Sarah re-join the club, and as a coach, I’m thrilled to have her in this team.

“She is a fantastic player and an out-and-out winner. In addition, she leads by example — through her actions both at training and on the field.

“Sarah is a footballer of the highest quality: technically excellent, with a great understanding of the game. She’s someone who defends and attacks with quality in equal measure.

“We’re all looking forward to seeing her back on the field in our Sky Blue jersey and excited to watch her reach new levels this year.”

Hunter has been training with the Sky Blues for the past three weeks and will be eligible to open Sydney FC’s 2025–26 campaign at home against Melbourne City at Leichhardt Oval on Saturday afternoon.
