Canberra United sign ‘quality’ Young Matilda: ‘Our fans will love watching her play’

CommBank Young Matildas midfielder Ava Briedis has signed for Canberra United ahead of the Ninja A-League 2025-26 season.

The Australia youth international moves to the nation’s capital as Canberra head coach Antoni Jagarinec begins to finalise his playing roster for the new season, adding her extensive skillset to the club’s existing midfield stocks.

“I am thrilled to be able to welcome a player of the quality of Ava to Canberra United ahead of the Ninja A-League season,” Jagarinec said, with Canberra due to begin their season against Newcastle Jets on November 2.

“We are aware of the quality that Ava has, having assessed her abilities during her time with Melbourne Victory. She is an energetic player with a good eye for a pass and enjoys a challenge.

“As with each of the players we have identified, Ava fits the profile of a young and hungry player, an athlete who is comfortable on the ball, and a player who has experience of the competition. I am sure our fans will love watching her play.”

Briedis first joined Victory in 2022 from Football Victoria and, over her time with the Melbourne outfit, contributed at key moments including a late winner against Adelaide United to kick-off the 2024-25 season.

“I have always enjoyed playing against Canberra and have experienced the city as a player with both Victory and at Young Matildas. Looking forward to also playing in front of the Canberra faithful at McKellar Park”
