27 Isuzu UTE A-League academy guns picked for Joeys duty under Reds great

Former Adelaide United head coach and new CommBank Joeys boss Carl Veart has selected 27 teenagers from Isuzu UTE A-League clubs to take part in a domestic training camp in Canberra.

The October camp will serve as preparation for the 2026 AFC Under-17 Asian Cup qualifiers in November; the Joeys will take on Jordan, Bhutan, Iraq and the Philippines in Group E on the qualification path to the continental tournament.

Next year will be an important one for the Joeys with both the Under-17 Asian Cup and Under-17 World Cup – a tournament that will now take place every year – on the agenda.

The 27 Isuzu UTE A-League talents selected for duty come from 10 clubs – including Western United whose academy will continue to run in 2025-26 despite the club being placed in conditional hibernation.

Headlining the squad is Melbourne City young gun Akeem Gerald, who signed his first professional contract aged 15 last week.

This is new Joeys head coach Veart’s second camp in charge of the Australian youth international squad, with 13 players from his first squad returning for the 30-player Canberra training camp.

Veart first took charge of the Joeys for the 27th International Youth Football in Niigata, Japan earlier this month.

“On the back of the squad’s performance in Japan… the team and I have a better idea of the work we need to do, as a squad, at this camp,” Veart said.

“The tournament in Japan was our first step, as a group, to help our players develop against older competitors and ready themselves for international competition and now this window will be used to develop the playing group further and solidify our style of play.

“In Canberra we will look to refine what we do on and off the pitch and harness the talent that we have within this Joeys squad.  The aim and goal within camp is to challenge the boys in different ways and provide invaluable experience as we prepare for the AFC U17 Asian Cup qualifiers later this year.

“The more we can build the teams confidence, individually and together, the better chance we have of performing when the qualifiers arrive in November.”
