Sydney graduate’s loan move after new deal & there’s potential international ramifications

Sydney FC defender Aaron Gurd has signed a contract extension with the Isuzu UTE A-League club before joining Thai League 1 side Kanchanaburi Power FC on a season-long loan.

The 23-year-old was originally contracted until the end of the 2025-26 season but Gurd has now put pen-to-paper on fresh terms with the Sky Blues which will see him tied down until 2027.

As part of the loan agreement with Kanchanaburi, the club also have the option to make the move permanent when their domestic season finishes.

“I’m really excited to take on this challenge with Kanchanaburi Power,” said Gurd after his move was made official.

“After a tough spell with injuries, I feel fit, fresh and ready to get back on the pitch.

“Playing in Thailand will give me a completely different experience and I believe it will help me grow as a player — both on and off the field.

“It’s a big step, but one that I think will only make me stronger.”

Gurd managed just six games for the Sky Blues last season due to a succession of injuries but will now aim to make-up for lost time.

“It’s a good chance for Aaron to get on the field regularly and continue his development in a competitive league,” said Sydney FC head coach Ufuk Talay.

“We wish him the very best during his time in Thailand and look forward to seeing him back in Sky Blue stronger for the experience.”

A key factor in Gurd’s move to Thailand is that the central defender holds a Thai Passport and is therefore eligible to play for the national team.

Furthermore, the 23-year-old will also count as a homegrown player this season with the Thai League 1 season already three games in.

“My mum’s family are from Bangkok and Korat and they live over there, so I’m looking forward to having the opportunity to play in front of my grandpa and grandma, as well as my aunties and extended family.”

Gurd will now link-up with former England, Tottenham, Newcastle and Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend who signed for Power earlier this off-season.

Furthemore, Sydney FC have also confirmed the departures of three more players with midfielder Matthew Scarcella moving to the Norwegian second division while defender Kyle Shaw and striker Alen Harbas have moved to Ireland and Cyprus respectively.
