Bruno Fornaroli’s new role after A-Leagues great calls time on professional career: Details

Bruno Fornaroli will transition into an off-field role with Melbourne Victory after stepping away from professional football.

Fornaroli will switch to working across Victory’s football department in key areas of talent management and talent identification following the conclusion of his contract at the end of the Isuzu UTE A-League 2024-25 campaign.

The 38-year-old Uruguayan-born Socceroo departs the competition as an A-Leagues icon and one of the competition’s greatest imports, having scored 112 goals – the third most in history -following stints with Victory, Perth Glory and Melbourne City.

Fornaroli, though, will not be walking away from football completely. The veteran forward, who is currently studying business management, will continue playing locally in conjunction with his Victory role.

“I am very grateful for my time as a player with Melbourne Victory and for all of the love and support I have received from the fans”, said Fornaroli, who won the 2015-16 Golden Boot.

“We had a great three seasons with two Grand Finals, helping me get back into the Socceroos where I had an opportunity to play in the Asian Cup, which is a highlight for any footballer.

“I am really happy to be given the opportunity to continue contributing to the club’s growth off the field, where I think my international experience and love of the game can help our players and our teams.”

Fornaroli – an Australia Cup winner with City in 2016 – became a Victory fan favourite following his arrival from Perth Glory in 2022-23, helping the four-time champions reach consecutive Grand Finals in 2023 and 2024.

He spearheaded Victory’s charge to the 2023 decider with 18 goals, which also led to his return to the CommBank Socceroos squad for the 2024 AFC Asian Cup.

Fornaroli made seven international appearances for Australia.

Melbourne Victory director of football John Didulica added: “Bruno has a special place in everybody’s hearts, so we are delighted that he is continuing with Melbourne Victory, albeit in an off-field role.

“Like everyone who follows Australian football, we have loved the highlights and moments that Bruno brought to our sport. He plays football with the passion of a fan, which is why he has become such an iconic figure for Melbourne Victory and for the A-League in general.

“Bruno’s knowledge and passion for football is second to none, so to be able to draw on his expertise and international networks will ensure he continues to have a positive impact on Victory and our players.”
