Michelle Heyman shares ‘main reason’ for Canberra United renewal & how it impacts next gen

Michelle Heyman is back for more at Canberra United in 2025-26 and the A-Leagues legend has explained the reason why.

Heyman has re-signed with Canberra after her historic 2024-25 campaign at McKellar Park.

Last season, the CommBank Matildas striker scored her 100th goal for Canberra while she also became the first person to play 200 games in the Ninja A-League.

The evergreen 37-year-old icon has spent 15 years at the capital club across two separate spells and she shared why she has re-committed to Canberra, who returned to the Finals Series for the first time in four years last term.

“There’s always opportunities already everywhere,” she told reporters on Monday. “But the big thing about me and football, I am a loyal player.

“I love loyalty. I feel like Canberra has given me so much in my career, and all I want to do is be able to give that back.

“So to have a Matilda playing in this league, to be able to inspire the next generation of kids, that’s super important for me. That’s the main reason why I continue to come back.

“I love Canberra United. I love everything that the clubs stand for.”

After a four-year absence from the Ninja A-League Finals Series, Canberra returned to the fold in head coach Antoni Jagarinec’s debut season.

With Jagarinec also returning in 2025-26, Heyman is eyeing silverware with the two-time champions – who have not reigned supreme since 2014.

“I want to show everyone that no matter what, if you can get together a good squad and we can perform, then we can win this league,” she said. “That’s what I want.

“I want silverware. I want a trophy. I want to make sure that Canberra is still recognised as the incredible club it was back in the day. That’s always in the front foot of my mind.

“Hopefully I can inspire the team to win and to want it.”
