Ruben Zadkovich hails Brisbane Roar’s ‘shining lights’: ‘Big future in the game’

Brisbane Roar head coach Ruben Zadkovich lauded young guns Thomas Waddingham and Rafael Struick following Friday night’s agonising 3-2 defeat to Sydney FC.

The Roar twice came from behind against Sydney but succumbed to a stunning 90th-minute strike from Jaiden Kucharski in the Round 3 Isuzu UTE A-League showdown at Suncorp Stadium.

While Brisbane crashed to a second consecutive loss to start the season, talented youngsters Waddingham and Struick caught the eye.

After a breakout season that attracted interest from German giants Bayern Munich and Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham, Waddingham scored his first goal of the season and teed up Indonesia international star Struick for his maiden A-Leagues goal from just his second appearance.

“Look it’s massive,” Zadkovich told Paramount+ when asked about Waddingham and Struick.

“They’re both real shining lights for us at the moment, Thomas especially.

“He has a real big future in the game.

“I’m happy for both players for their moments.”

More than 8,000 fans were in attendance for Brisbane’s first home match of the season after a loss away to Auckland FC in Round 1 prior to the second-round bye.

Zadkovich added: “There’s a lot of growth in this group.

“There’s a lot of positives for us to take and focus on, but a lot of areas to improve.

“…We’re a team definitely on the build.”
