Western Sydney Wanderers sign ‘one of the best young defenders in the league’

Western Sydney Wanderers have signed teenage defender Maya Lobo for the 2024-25 Ninja A-League season.

Lobo joins the Wanderers on a scholarship contract for the upcoming campaign, with Western Sydney due to kick-off their season against Newcastle Jets on Sunday.

The 18-year-old – who made two appearances for Central Coast Mariners in 2023-24 – arrives following a successful season with Macarthur Rams in NPLW NSW, playing an integral role in the team that won their third successive Grand Final.

“I already had some familiar faces here when I joined that made the transition process easy – everyone is really approachable, and I already feel part of the team,” said Lobo.

“I would obviously love to have a few more appearances within the Ninja A-League and would also like to set the goal for myself to get on the scoresheet for the club.

“We also have a lot of new players like me, so we must get used to our own styles of play and gel quickly as a group to be ready for the season ahead.”

Lobo is the sixth new arrival at the Wanderers, joining Ena HaradaMilly Bennett (scholarship contract), Sienna Saveska, Talia Kapetanellis and Paige Hayward at the club.

“Maya has put in the effort to get to where she has and seeing her work alongside some of our players in the off-season, I felt she definitely had the talent, but also the temperament to fit into our squad seamlessly,” said head coach Robbie Hooker.

“She is one of the best young defenders in the league right now, and we are excited to see what she has to offer as the season progresses.”
