Newcastle Jets have announced the signing of former Young Matildas skipper Sheridan Gallagher on a one-year deal.

Currently playing Rugby League for the Newcastle Knights, Gallagher obtained permission from her NRLW club to return to football for the upcoming Ninja A-League season.

No stranger to the A-Leagues, Gallagher made her breakthrough with the Western Sydney Wanderers back in 2021 and went on to the record 21 appearances in Red and Black.

“I can’t wait to get out there in Jets colours for my first game,” said Gallagher after news of the deal was made official.

“I’m grateful that the Knights have allowed me to play in the Ninja A-League this season.

“I love Newcastle and I feel at home here as an adopted Novocastrian. I can’t wait to play in front of our Members, fans and the community and inspire the next generation of kids coming through.

She added: “The first game can’t come quick enough for me. I will give it my all and can’t wait to represent the Newcastle community when I put on the Jets shirt.”

Following on from her impressive 2021-22 Ninja A-League campaign with the Wanderers Gallagher then captained the Young Matildas squad at the U20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica back in 2022.

“Sheridan adds depth to our attacking stocks,” said Newcastle Jets head coach, Ryan Campbell.

“She will add speed and strength up front and I’m excited to see what type of impact she will have for us.

He continued: “Her previous experience with the Wanderers and Young Matildas will serve her well and I know she will be a hit with our fan base.”

Gallagher adds some much needed depth to a Newcastle attack which heads into the 2024-25 campaign without experienced striker Melina Ayres and last season’s top scorer Sarina Bolden.

The Jets kick off their Ninja A-League season on November 3 with a home clash against Gallagher’s former side, Western Sydney Wanderers.
