Juan Mata shares his Wanderers ‘research’ while praising star teammate who has a ‘lot of potential’

Spanish icon Juan Mata speaks to the media ahead of his Isuzu UTE A-League debut in Saturday night’s Sydney Derby at CommBank Stadium.

Juan Mata said he has done his research on Western Sydney Wanderers and the region as the Spanish superstar gears up for his first Sydney Derby.

Mata is set to make his highly-anticipated Isuzu UTE A-League debut this weekend when the Wanderers host cross-town rivals Sydney FC at CommBank Stadium on Saturday night.

A FIFA World Cup and UEFA Champions League winner, the former Spain, Chelsea and Manchester United attacker brings a wealth of experience from Europe.

The 36-year-old is also familiar with his new surroundings in Western Sydney.

“I’ve done my research on the fans, on the club and the history of the club,” Mata told reporters ahead of his showdown with Sydney FC star Douglas Costa.

“I know where we are in this part of Sydney. I know that it’s hard-working people. A lot of passionate people supporting the club.

“I know the victories the club had, in Asia (2014 AFC Champions League final) and the finals. I know fans here want to see a team that gives everything on the pitch, that plays offensive and attacking football but also connected with our community and fans.

“I know the difference between different clubs in Australia and their fans. I’m proud to be at Wanderers. Since the first day, I felt they’re trying to build great things at this club, for now and the future. I’m happy to be part of it.”

While all eyes will be on Mata at CommBank Stadium in Round 1, one of his Wanderers teammates is looking to build on a standout 2023-24 campaign which resulted in a career-high nine goals.

Nicolas Milanovic heads into the new season fresh off signing a contract extension after turning down offers from Europe to remain at Wanderland.

The 22-year-old was linked with a move away after earning the club’s 2023-24 Golden Boot while he was also named the Wanderers’ Media Player of the Year and Members’ Player of the Year.

“I think he is fearless. He has a lot of confidence in himself which is important for his age,” said Mata.

“He proved last season what he can do. He still wants to learn.

“He is very powerful. When he is in behind, I don’t think there’s many defenders who can catch him.

“Very good left foot. When he comes inside, he can shoot, pass. His decision making is good.

“I think he is keen to learn to keep progressing as a player. But he has a lot of potential. Hopefully he will have another good season for us, then lets see where he goes or if he stays.”
