New Zealand international leaves Wellington Phoenix for overseas opportunity

Wellington Phoenix have announced star Michaela Foster will not return for the 2024-25 Ninja A-League season as she pursues an opportunity abroad.

An integral part of the Phoenix squad, New Zealand international full-back Foster leaves Wellington with 38 appearances, two goals and six assists to her name across two seasons.

Foster, who initially joined the Phoenix on a scholarship deal, earned A-Leagues All Star Women’s selection last term after she dominated the club’s awards night in 2022-23 – winning Women’s Player of the Year, Players’ Player of the Year, Members’ Player of the Year and Media Player of the Year.

Foster was also part of the Football Ferns squad for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and this year’s Olympic Games in Paris.

“Selfishly I’m disappointed Mickey won’t be playing for the ‘Nix this season,” said Phoenix head coach Paul Temple.

“But I’m also excited because I know she’s ready to take the next step in her football career.

“Mickey’s established herself as one of the best full-backs in the A-League in just two years. She’s reliable, smart and composed, I’ve never actually seen her flustered, and she’s the
ultimate pro.

“I’m sure she’ll be a success wherever she lands and her new team will be better for having Michaela Foster in their XI.”
