Western Sydney Wanderers re-sign 13-time Matilda: ‘Definitely lit a new fire in me’

It's been another massive week in the Isuzu UTE A-League and Liberty A-League with goalkeepers on the move and a few international players set to ply their trade on our shores for the upcoming season.

Western Sydney Wanderers captain Amy Harrison has signed a two-year contract extension with the Liberty A-League side.

A 13-time Matilda, Harrison will embark on her fourth season with the Wanderers across two spells after a memorable 2023-24 campaign.

Harrison – wearing the captain’s armband – guided Western Sydney to a club-record haul of goals and the second best goal difference in their Liberty A-League history as the Wanderers agonisingly missed out on the Finals Series on goal difference.

The 28-year-old was also part of the historic 2019 side that reached the Semi-Finals.

“I don’t think we are done yet, I think we are just beginning,” said Harrison.

“For the first time since I have been here we have real stability with staff and with the majority of the playing group, and I think that is exciting.

“I think there’s really good young talent coming through and I think we have a lot of experience with the other end of the scale so it’s aligning well and I want to be a part of that and keep moving it forward.”’

After scoring three goals in 18 matches in 2022-23, Harrison scored twice in 22 matches last season as she was deployed in a more defensive role at centre-back.

She added: “I’m a big believer in always trying to learn something new, and this has definitely lit a new fire in me to keep learning and growing.

“… I think just aligning with being the captain and a leader in this team I think it helps being a defender as well and having that role to play.

“I think personally, I just want to keep getting better every single day. As a person, as a leader, as a teammate, as a player for this club. To just keep being the best version of myself and wherever that takes me it takes me, I’m just going to take it step by step each day.”

The Wanderers have already re-signed Julie Dolan Medallist Sophie Harding, Gemma Ferris, and Ella Buchanan.

Meanwhile, Alexia Apostolakis (Melbourne City), Kaylie Collins, Vicky Bruce, Maliah Morris and Ischia Brooking have departed Wanderland.

“Amy is the kind of player that sets the standard for the younger members of the group. Both on and off the pitch she is always pushing for them to be better and, more importantly, leading by example,” Wanderers head coach Robbie Hooker said.

“She brings a lot of quality as a composed and experienced player, and it’s that kind quality that we hope rubs off on the less experienced members of our squad.”
