What’s more, Fornaroli ran over to the City bench and celebrated his and the team’s opening goal with the club’s assistant coach.

“Yeah, I promised him before [the game] ‘tonight I score a goal for you’

“So this goal is for Patrick [Kisnorbo] today to celebrate his birthday,” Fornaroli told Fox Sports.

Kisnorbo, a former Socceroo defender, turned 37 on Saturday.

Additionally, Fornaroli is the first Melbourne City player to both score a goal and assist another in a single game at home since he himself did so against Wellington in March 2016.

The win puts City into third, two points ahead of Victory who are in Perth to face Glory on Sunday.

It’s a boost for City’s chances of hosting an elimination final with sides in third and fourth having the crucial home final.

And ominously for the rest of the league, the brilliant striker reckons he’s around “90 per cent fit” after six months out with a serious leg injury.

“Tonight is the first day I feel better, or 90 per cent, because always I feel pain,” he revealed to Fox Sports.

“It’s not easy to come back. Especially for a long time, six months, to come back and play.

“Maybe everyone thinks you can come back quickly but sometimes you need time.

“Step by step, I feel better.

“But the most important thing is to win the three points tonight.””We’re happy to have him back at his best,” added City winger Daniel Arzani, who also had a fabulous game.
