Wanderers eyeing revenge for Sydney Derby thrashing

Western Sydney Wanderers defender Michael Thwaite admits an element of ‘revenge’ is driving his side ahead of Sunday night’s derby against Sydney FC.

The Wanderers were demolished 5-0 by the Sky Blues back in Round 10 as a red-hot Adrian Mierzejewski tore Josep Gombau’s side apart, netting a brace.

And it’s a result which Thwaite insists the Wanderers are keen to atone for.

“We’re all looking forward to the Sydney Derby,” Thwaite told Fox Sports earlier in the week.

“We want to make amends from last time.

“It becomes a lot about revenge, especially what they did to us at our home.”

In an up-and-down campaign, Western Sydney head into the derby in sixth and could extend the gap to seven points over seventh-placed Roar with a win.

Western Sydney come into the clash on the back of three-matches undefeated and Thwaite believes the side are starting to find their best football after a slow start to the season.

“I think that’s always the case when a new coach comes in, new style of play, new philosophy,” Thwaite said.

“In a nutshell, the last few games under him are exactly the way he wants us to play.

“Slowly we are getting there and we are peaking at the right time.”
