Versatile midfielder parts ways with Phoenix

Wellington Phoenix have confirmed that versatile midfielder Ali Abbas has parted ways with the club, effective immediately.

The Iraqi international joined Phoenix prior to the Hyundai A-League 2017/18 season after a difficult stint in Korea with Pohang Steelers.

Abbas made eight appearances for Wellington earlier this season but hasn’t played since Phoenix’s loss to Perth Glory back in Round 11.

“I’ve enjoyed my time in Wellington,” Abbas said via an official club release.

“And I wish the club the best in their push to make the finals this season. I’d like to thank all the fans and the players for the support they’ve shown me.”

Wellington travel to tackle league-leaders Sydney FC on Friday night.
