Hyundai A-League Team of the Week: Round 13

Sydney FC’s dominant win over Perth Glory may have attracted the headlines but there were plenty of outstanding individual displays across the league over the weekend.

Here’s the Hyundai A-League Team of the Week for Round 13. Did we get it right?

KEEPER

Ben Kennedy (Mariners)

Continues to be one of Paul Okon’s shrewdest signings as his string of first-half saves on New Year’s Eve kept Central Coast on track for a clean sheet against Wellington.

DEFENDERS

Jason Geria (Victory)

Great to see the Victory right-back return to his very best on Friday night. Provided the assist for Kosta Barbarouses’ opener against Newcastle Jets and was a marauding presence throughout.

Andrew Durante (Phoenix)

In and out of Phoenix’s team this season, the skipper showed his worth with an excellent defensive display in the 0-0 draw in Gosford.

Jacob Pepper (Roar)

Continues to defy expectations as a makeshift defender, with his latest contribution a succession of last-ditch blocks and tackles in Brisbane Roar’s backs-to-the-wall win in Adelaide.

MIDFIELDERS

Adrian Mierzejewski (Sydney FC)

It’s almost unfair that Sydney FC have two absolute geniuses in midfield. Mierzejewski was simply masterful in picking apart Perth Glory.

Fahid Ben Khalfallah (Roar)

It was Ben Khalfallah’s clever pressing that made both of Brisbane’s goals against Adelaide, scoring the first himself with aplomb before laying on the second for Massimo Maccarone.

Brandon O’Neill (Sydney FC)

Scored the crucial opening goal against Glory when the Sky Blues were not yet at their best and followed that with a complete, classy performance behind a rampant front four.

Roly Bonevacia (Wanderers)

Saved perhaps his finest Wanderers display for an important occasion as his positivity on the ball kept the hosts from dropping too deep against Melbourne City.

FORWARDS

Bobo (Sydney FC)

Another week, another hat-trick for Sydney FC’s star spearhead. His treble in the romp past Perth might have been bookended by penalties, but his stunning second from an impossible angle is worthy enough of admission.

Oriol Riera (Wanderers)

Josep Gombau will crave a regular scorer and Riera has the quality, as he showed with a goal and an assist in the hard-earned 2-1 win over Melbourne City.

Leroy George (Victory)

Denied a goal by the crossbar, George went on to create Besart Berisha’s match-winner against Newcastle as part of another exciting, incisive effort on the wing.
