Bruno Fornaroli’s brilliance reached exceptional heights during his debut Hyundai A-League campaign as he claimed the Golden Boot with 23 goals during a sparkling 2015/16 season.
The striker was at the peak of his powers by his third Melbourne Derby, scoring twice in the February 13 encounter to help John van’t Schip’s side draw 2-2 with rivals Victory in a pulsating clash at AAMI Park.
A night full of entertainment in Round 19 began in style with City’s opener, a goal of real beauty that started and ended with Fornaroli.
The Uruguayan battled for possession on halfway and launched a counter-attack with a genius rabona. He stayed in the game and got on the end of Aaron Mooy’s no-look reverse pass before dinking a delightful finish over Danny Vukovic.
Victory immediately equalised when Fahid Ben Khalfallah skilfully turned in a rebound, but parity lasted only three minutes.
Fornaroli this time glanced home a header from Mooy’s free-kick to restore City’s lead ahead of half-time.
The drama was not done there.
Gui Finkler somewhat inadvertently headed in the equaliser within moments of the restart, before later having a free-kick controversially chalked off as the two sides battled to a breathless draw.
