Some fantastic fresh faces have stated their case to be early contenders for the Johnny Warren Medal, awarded to the best player in the league at season’s end.
Milos Ninkovic of Sydney FC won it last season.
He could win it again.
But here are five names who’ve made a strong impression after 10 rounds.
Adrian Mierzejewski (Sydney FC)
We knew he’d be good. But in Saturday’s Sydney Derby, the Polish international showed how good he really is. Such an effortless mover with the ball, the attacking midfielder combines pace with power.
After overcoming a short injury earlier in the season, his two goals in the derby a harbinger of things to come with the all-conquering Sky Blues who are on top of the league.
Bart Schenkeveld (Melbourne City)
Built like a tank, the Dutchman combines brawn with brain is enjoying regular football after a period out injured with knee problems in Holland.
City’s season has been somewhat up and down, but the the 26-year-old defender signed from former City boss John van ‘t Schip’s PEC Zwolle in the Eredivisie has been consistently good.
Actually, very good.
Dimi Petratos (Newcastle Jets)
How good would it be for an Australian to win the medal?
And the Jets attacker who can also play as a “10” is building a compelling case 10 rounds in.
Tricky with ball at feet, he presses superbly well and can score long-range rockets.
Pushing for a Socceroo call up, Petratos’ form has mirrored that of his Jets, and both are hugely exciting to watch.
Daniel De Silva (Central Coast Mariners)
One of the reasons why the Mariners are building a case for Finals Series football is their diminutive playmaker.
At 20, his best days are still ahead of him, yet he’s already transforming the Mariners.
Paul Okon, his coach at Central Coast, did everything he could to bring the WA talent to Gosford. And now, fans are seeing why he couldn’t sleep until after the deal was done.
De Silva has proven to be a dream signing.
Josh Brillante (Sydney FC)
He may be back in the Socceroos frame by season’s end. And why not.
Brillante, 24, is a natural successor – and not just because of his bushy beard – to Mile Jedinak in the national team’s number six role.
This season, the former Serie A player (he signed with Fiorentina from Newcastle Jets in 2014), has been outstanding at an outstanding side, Sydney FC.
The Bundaberg-born midfielder combines an incredible work ethic with exceptional tackling and an ability to score goals.
