Western Sydney Wanderers captain Robbie Cornthwaite is confident of adapting to a possession-heavy playing style as the club enters a new era under Josep Gombau.
Gombau took his first training session on Thursday morning following his appointment as Tony Popovic’s permanent successor.
The Spaniard has spent the last week getting to know his new surroundings and Cornthwaite says the team knows exactly what to expect from Gombau, who takes charge for the first time against Melbourne City on Sunday.
“Everyone knows, from his time at Adelaide, that he likes to keep the ball and play attacking football so that’s going to take a bit of time to implement,” Cornthwaite said.
“It’ll be step-by-step but we’ve got an experienced and talented group so hopefully we are able to grasp those new ideas quite quickly. “
“As the weeks roll out, you’ll be able to see more and more of that come into our game.”
While undefeated over the season’s first five rounds, Cornthwaite admits Western Sydney should have turned their four draws into more points.
“To be honest, we’ve missed a couple of opportunities,” the defender said.
“To pick up a point away from home is a positive, but we put ourselves in a position to win those games [having led against Sydney FC, Newcastle Jets and Melbourne Victory] so to not come away with three points is disappointing.
“It’s still early in the season and this group knows what it’s capable of.
“When we play our best football we’re going to be very hard to stop.”
