Brisbane Roar’s hopes of getting their Hyundai A-League campaign going have been dealt a blow with news goalkeeper Michael Theo is set for a stint on the sidelines through injury.
The veteran gloveman has a hand problem and will miss at least a fortnight.
It’s a problem the five-time Hyundai A-League winner has battled since pre-season, with Aloisi opting to leave Theo out to try and get the injury right.
“He got scans [on Friday]. He will be out for at least a couple of weeks,” Aloisi told reporters on Saturday.
“It’s not broken but we just have to make sure it heals.”
Jamie Young will take Theo’s place for Sunday’s crunch clash with Central Coast Mariners at Suncorp Stadium.
Like the Mariners, Roar is yet to win this season, although they picked up their first point last weekend with a sensational comeback to draw 3-3 with Wellington Phoenix.
“It will be tough because the Mariners are in a similar position; they feel like they should have more points, like we do,” Aloisi conceded.
“We know we will get stronger each game. We are still confident in what we are doing.”
Sunday’s clash could see a Roar debut for young winger Corey Gameiro, who hasn’t played in the Hyundai A-League for almost two years as he comes back from a third knee reconstruction.
While he wouldn’t confirm if Gameiro would see some game time, Aloisi admits his return could be a spark for Roar.
“He’s itching, he can’t wait,” the Roar boss said of Gameiro.
“If he does get the chance to play he will be bursting out of his skin; his positivity will be a boost for us. But he’s one of those guys who is always up and about so it’s about trying to relax him.
“He’s a weapon. With all the injuries he has had he deserves an opportunity and has worked hard to be back.”
