Transfer news: Glory sign Spanish midfielder

Perth Glory have today confirmed the signing of Spanish midfielder Xavi Torres on a one-year Hyundai A-League deal, pending medical and visa clearance.

Torres is a former teammate of Diego Castro at Getafe and like Andreu, also enjoyed a spell at Barcelona where he featured regularly for the reserve team coached by Pep Guardiola.

It was also under Guardiola that Torres made both of his first-team appearances for the Catalan giants and after leaving the Camp Nou, he joined fellow-La Liga side Malaga who duly loaned him to Levante for whom he played more than 60 times, scoring five goals.

In 2012, the former Villareal youth product was signed by Getafe for a fee of around $800,000 and after one season with the Madrid-based side, he moved on to Real Betis whom he subsequently represented in the Europa League and helped steer to the Segunda Division title.

Now 30, Glory’s latest Spanish recruit spent last season playing for Sporting Gijon and made 19 appearances as the Asturian club narrowly failed to retain their top-flight status.

He flew into Perth with his partner over the weekend and is clearly excited by the prospect of beginning a new chapter in his career.

“I’m really excited to be here,” he said. “I have heard good things about the club and the league from Diego [Castro] and Kenny [Lowe] and now I want to win things with Perth Glory.”
