Sydney FC’s depth key to Championship tilt

Sydney FC defender Alex Wilkinson says competition for places makes the Sky Blues’ squad the strongest he’s been part of in the Hyundai A-League.

The Sky Blues are just one match away from their second premiership-championship double after beating Perth Glory 3-0 in Saturday night’s Semi Final at Allianz Stadium.

Wilkinson, a former Central Coast Mariners captain, has been integral to Sydney’s record of conceding just 12 goals all season.

“Arnie has done a great job of recruiting at least two players for each position,” Wilkinson told Fox Sports.

“When you’ve got that sort of depth, obviously everyone is fighting to get in the team and all of a sudden at training the level lifts and lifts and lifts.

“That’s only going to help the first 11 on the weekend.

“Depth-wise I think we’re great and then some of the foreign boys we’ve got here like Ninko [Milos Ninkovic] and Filip [Holosko] and Bobo, I’m in a lucky position at the back. When the boys are on, to watch them play is great,” the Aussie World Cup 2014 defender said.

Sydney FC's Josh Brillante tangles with Perth Glory's Richard Garcia.

And alongside Wilkinson was relative new boy Jordy Buijs, who had a superb game in central defence.

He even got under the skin of Glory keeper Liam Reddy and scored a superb goal that any striker would be proud of.

“He’s fitted in absolutely brilliantly,” Wilkinson said of the Dutchman.

“That goes back to the depth we’ve created and Arnie’s tactical side of the game.

“Everyone is so confident and comfortable.”
