Adelaide break drought with astonishing win

A rampant second-half performance from Adelaide United saw them secure their first win of the season with a 10-2 rout of Western Sydney Wanderers Women in Round 12 of the Westfield W-League at Elite Systems Football Centre on Saturday night.

Hat-tricks from Sofia Huerta and Adriana Jones, a brace from Racheal Quigley, and strikes from Alexandra Chidiac and substitute Ally Ladas, overturned an early deficit as Adelaide claimed an elusive victory.

Erica Holloway grabbed a consolation for the Wanderers, but it was inconsequential in what was a dominant victory for the hosts.

Western Sydney opened the scoring when Sarah Willacy could not keep out Helen Petinos’ in-swinging corner.

However, Adelaide responded a minute after conceding. Jones saw a header smash the crossbar, before the ball fell to Quigley who struck a sweetly-timed volley on the bounce to restore parity.

And on 28 minutes they would take the lead, courtesy of a successfully converted Jones spot-kick after being tripped in the area to make it 2-1.

After an even first-half, the hosts extended their advantage as Huerta unleashed a thunderous drive past the goalkeeper and into the bottom corner to make it 3-1.

The visitors pulled a goal back through Erica Halloway, who rounded the onrushing Willacy to pass her shot into an empty net.

However, it would be one-way traffic thereafter as a relentless United could not be contained.

Jones and Huerta added a further two goals each to complete their respective hat-tricks, while Quigley netted her second of the game.

Chidiac and substitute Ally Ladas also etched their names on the scoresheet to seal an astonishing victory.
