Transfer news: Victory sign former Mariners goalkeeper

Melbourne Victory have signed former Central Coast Mariners goalkeeper Alastair Bray for the Hyundai A-League 2016/17 season.

Bray, who has been on trial at Victory for the past few months, fills the goalkeeping vacancy left by the recent departure of Danny Vukovic.

He joins Lawrence Thomas and youth team goalkeeper Lucas Spinella on Victory’s roster for the upcoming campaign.

“Alastair has been impressive in training with us and we’re excited to officially welcome him to the club,” said Victory head coach Kevin Muscat.

“We have already seen improvement in Alastair’s game in his short time at Victory, and we are confident he will perform his role when his opportunity presents.”

Bray, a former Victory youth team product, established himself at PlayStation 4 Victoria club Bentleigh Greens, where he made 57 appearances from 2013-15.

He was the starting goalkeeper for the Greens when they won the 2015 PS4 NPL Victoria Championship.

In January this year, the 23-year-old signed with Central Coast, making his Hyundai A-League debut in Round 15 against Adelaide United.

While on trial with Victory this pre-season, Bray played 90 minutes in a friendly against Port Melbourne, and the second half of last week’s trial match against Adelaide United.

“It’s a big step up for me and I’m really looking forward to the opportunity,” Bray said.

“I really enjoy working with Lawrence. He’s at a really high level. I’ve just got to keep working hard and pushing him.

“Dean (Anastasiadis) is a good coach and he’s really getting the best out of me at the moment.

“For me it’s just to continue improving, and to be ready whenever the opportunity comes.”
