Sky Blues skipper edging towards injury return

Sydney FC captain Alex Brosque has expressed his frustration at being forced to watch the Sky Blues from the sidelines but revealed he is nearing a return to first-team action.

The 32-year-old hasn’t played since limping off with a hamstring injury during Sydney’s 4-1 win over Central Coast Mariners on Boxing Day.

“It’s very hard watching from the side,” Brosque said.

“You’d love to be out there, being able to help the boys in the good and bad. Games like against Newcastle and beating the Wanderers, those are the games that you want to be out there sharing the emotion of winning a game like that.

“On the flip side, it’s hard to see your team mates when they lose and you’re not out there to be able to do anything about it.

“It’s probably the hardest part about being injured and I’m just looking forward to getting back out there and being with the boys again.

“To be honest I’ve had to do a fair bit of work which is normal,” he continued.

“The main reason being because of what happened last time, we wanted to give it time and do everything properly to get the hamstring strengthened up and get a lot of kilometres in the legs.

“I’ve done a lot of hard boring running and a lot of work to get back to make sure this doesn’t happen again.”

Alex Brosque is set to return from injury against the Mariners.

Brosque said the hamstring is feeling good after returning to full training with the squad last week, as he set his sights on Sydney FC’s next home match against Perth Glory at Allianz Stadium as his return game.

“I’m feeling good, I’m back with the team now,” he said.

“It’s been a frustrating period out not training and having to watch the boys but I’ll get a good two weeks of training under me and then I’ll be right to play against Perth.

“The plan was to try and be back for Adelaide but because of the week last week there wasn’t too much training involved with the team because of the midweek game as well.

“The physios wanted me to have two good training weeks before I start playing so I’ll start that this week and then be ready.”
