There will be twice the fun this week for Westfield W-League fans on ABC TV with both semi-finals broadcast LIVE* on Saturday and Sunday at 3pm nationally.
Saturday sees reigning champs Melbourne Victory host Canberra United, while a day later premiers Perth Glory welcome Sydney FC with a berth in the grand final awaiting the two winners.
Melbourne will have mixed memories of facing Canberra this season. They secured a superb 4-2 away win in the nation’s capital early on, but fell to a 1-0 home defeat in October in a result which kick-started a mini slump for the Victory.
They also face the added challenge of recovering physically and mentally from their recent trip to Japan.
Canberra, conversely, are on a high after inflicting a rare defeat on Perth Glory last weekend to reach the finals in style.
Perth’s 2-1 loss in Canberra was indeed a rare stumble in an imperious season for the Glory.
However, their penultimate regular season match was a stunning 5-0 defeat of Sydney FC in Wollongong.
On the surface it seems unlikely that the Sky Blues could turn-around such a scoreline within a fortnight, but Sydney have several aces in their hand, including significant big-match experience.
Finals football is always of a high standard, and after a stunning season in the Westfield W-League, both matches are sure to be mouth-watering prospects for local fans and nationwide TV viewers alike.
The ABC TV broadcast games are hosted by Stephanie Brantz, with former Westfield Matildas and W-League star Sarah Walsh joining Peter Wilkins in commentary.
Catch all the action Live nationally at 3.00pm Saturday and Sunday on ABC TV, or catch up from Monday on ABC iView with a full replay each Tuesday at 3.30am.
*Sunday match only broadcast live into WA at 12midday AWST, 3pm local time in other regions.
