Western Sydney Wanderers claimed their first every Westfield W-League victory over Sydney FC in hot and testing conditions at Sydney United Sports Centre, Edensor Park on Sunday.
A lone goal to American forward Jasmyne Spencer was cancelled out by an early penalty converted by Keelin Winters, with a late own goal from Teigen Allen handing the three points to Western Sydney in what was only their second victory of the campaign.
Western Sydney Wanderers started sprightly in the first half carving out two chances in quick succession within the first five minutes as Sydney FC struggled to break down their midfield.
Caitlin Jarvie twice fired wide before, at the other end, a whipped cross from Amy Harrison was only centimetres off the leaping Jasmyne Spencers’ head when she found space in the box.
The Wanderers opened the scoring in the 14th minute as Winters converted from the penalty spot after a tracking Teigen Allen fouled Winters as she burst into the box. The Wanderers forward making no mistake as she slammed the ball into the bottom corner.
The Sky Blues threatened with inventive runs from Amy Harrison and Jasmyne Spencer creating half chances, however they went in one down at the break.
The second half started with the Wanderers enjoying much the same amount of possession in midfield however they were pegged back 10 minutes in after a vicious Jasmyne Spencer strike from the edge of the area levelled the scores.
The American pounced on a loose ball and drove forward before firing hard and low into the far bottom corner from the edge of the penalty box.
The Wanderers pressed hard to regain the lead and they took it in fortuitous circumstances in the 62nd minute as Teigen Allen placed the ball into her own net.
Caitlin Jarvie broke the Sky Blues defence and charged into the box and her cutback was met the helpless Allen who could only divert the ball into the net past a stranded Sian McLaren in goal.
Sydney FC pushed for an equaliser and came close with efforts from Uzunlar and Logarzo flashing wide of the post, while at the other end Carney hit the bar with a deft chip.
The Sky Blues were unable to claw back a goal however, and succumbed to their first ever Westfield W-League loss to their cross town rivals leaving Sydney FC in second place.
Sydney FC next host Brisbane Roar at home at Lambert Park while the Wanderers travel away to play fourth placed Canberra at McKellar Park.
