The Scout loves every team in the Hyundai A-League and as such has selected a player from every club to kick-off the new season. Here’s who I’ve selected and why.
Goalkeeper
Ante Covic ( Western Sydney Wanderers ) – The Wanderers pride themselves on their miserly defence and like a good red (and black) this guy just seems to be getting better with age.
Defenders
Manny Muscat ( Wellington Phoenix ) – A versatile player who could be used in midfielder at various stages throughout the season which will give him a chance to create goals.
Alex Gersbach ( Sydney FC ) – The 17-year-old has been hugely impressive in pre-season and appears to have claimed the problematic left-back position for the rejuvenated Sky Blues.
Nigel Boogaard ( Adelaide United ) – The centre-back will once again get through a huge amount of work on the ball given the Reds possession based style and is a great option from set-pieces.
Midfielders
John Hutchinson ( Central Coast Mariners ) – The Mariners skipper may not get the goals and glory but we love his work ethic and at $116,000 he is an absolute steel to boss our midfield.
Thomas Broich ( Brisbane Roar ) – There’s not much that needs to be said about the reigning Johnny Warren medal winner. He’s sure to create and score loads of goals this season and is a must-have.
Gui Finkler ( Melbourne Victory ) – The Brazilian appears to have nailed down a permanent starting position in the Navy Blue this season and is absolutely lethal from set-piece duties.
Erik Paartalu ( Melbourne City ) – It’s great to see this guy back on our shores and we’ve thrust him straight into our starting line-up. Has an eye for goal and the technique to match.
Forwards
Jeronimo Neumann ( Newcastle Jets ) – The Argentine goal poacher should relish the opportunity to lead the line for the Jets and has a proven track record of finding the back of the net.
Besart Berisha ( Melbourne Victory ) – Bes is our prediction to take out this season’s Golden Boot awards and is sure to be banging in the goals at regular intervals this season.
Andy Keogh ( Perth Glory ) – The Irishman has really caught the eye since his arrival Down Under and has been smashing in the goals in pre-season with clinical finishing.
Bench
Matt Acton (Brisbane Roar) – With first choice goalkeeper Michael Theo injured for the start of the season Acton answered an SOS from the Roar and will vie with Jamie Young for a starting berth.
Corey Brown (Brisbane Roar) – We’re predicting a breakout season from the youngster who will hopefully see a lot of game time in a Championship winning defensive line.
Antony Golec (Western Sydney Wanderers) – Expect the Wanderers to once again keep plenty of clean sheets this season. Golec won’t play every game but is a great one to have on your subs bench.
Jesse Makarounas (Melbourne Victory) – Technically gifted, this former Perth Glory man has impressed Muscat and is a great player to have at your disposal off the bench.
Scout’s honour
– Don’t forget to choose your captain wisely as they score double-points for your team.
– The Socceroos and Young Socceroos are currently on international duty so steer clear of any Aussie representatives for round 1
– You can make unlimited changes to your squad right up until Friday night’s round 1 kick-off.
