Barca great to join Adelaide dugout?

Adelaide United could have an ever greater Barcelona influence this season with their former great Guillermo Amor a chance to join the club on a full-time basis.

Amor is in the Adelaide for the next month to assist Reds boss Josep Gombau and will be alongside him in the dugout for Friday’s match with Malaga as well as next month’s Foxtel All-Stars clash against Juventus.

But that partnership, which developed coming through Barca’s famed development system, could be prolonged with Gombau hinting a permanent move could be on the cards.

“He’s free of contract,” Gombau told the Adelaide Advertiser.

“Maybe if the club and Guillermo – both sides – agree and want to do something more, they can speak in the future.

“He wants to be involved in professional football again because for many years he’s worked with the kids.
He can help me a lot because he was a professional player with a lot of experience.”

The addition of Amor, who was capped 37 times by Spain and played more than 500 games for Barca winning numerous honours, would be a huge boon for the Reds for the upcoming Hyundai A-League season.

The 46-year-old has been in Australia for about a week and we’ll get the chance to see just what impact he’s had in Friday’s battle with La Liga side Malaga at Adelaide Oval.

The Spanish side’s 24-man squad will arrive in Adelaide today with stars such as Paraguayan striker Roque Santa Cruz and Liverpool loanee Luis Alberto in their ranks.

“For us it’s a good experience and also for the people in Adelaide to see a La Liga team play here,” Gombau said.

“For them it’s an important period because they need to work hard in a short time. This will be their first game with their new coach so they’ll want to win.

The match is on live TV in Spain. It’s a friendly but with extra ingredients. They need to play hard.”
