Patrick Kisnorbo believes the challenge of meeting quality teams in England will hold Melbourne City in good stead for the upcoming Hyundai A-League season.
Having forged a decade-long career in the UK – with successful periods at Leicester City (2005-2009) and Leeds United (2009-2013) – the robust central defender has had previous encounters against Bury, Oldham Athletic and Bolton Wanderers during his career.
While Kisnorbo missed selection in the Club’s 2-2 draw against Bury at Carrington Training Centre, Kisnorbo played the full 45 minutes in the second half against Oldham Athletic on Saturday.
Familiar with Oldham’s Boundary (SportsDirect.com) Park Kisnorbo said that Melborune City FC had matched their English opponents for much of the 90 minutes.
“It was a good test for the team, they [Oldham] were a good side but I thought we matched them,” Kisnorbo said.
“Obviously we are getting used to the style that we want to play and it’s good to get out and test ourselves, again, against a good opponent.
“I thought we were good. It was a good result, and really we should have held them to [1-0].
“But it was a good hit out, a good test for the boys and good for the triallists to come in – obviously it is a bit different when they are in – but it was a good test for everyone.
“I played [at Boundary Park] in a Cup game here in winter – so it wasn’t as green and as nice as this [last time].
“It’s a tough place to come and Oldham are good team.”
A player of immense experience in England, Kisnorbo said it was important for Melbourne City FC to meet oppponents from the English leagues due to the level of opponent.
“I think the pace – it’s a bit quicker here – a bit more direct and usually they do punish you if you do something wrong,” Kisnorbo said.
“Especially when we face Bolton, they are a Championship team, obviously they have been in the [English] Premier League and I think they will be quicker than [Oldham].
“They will have more of a game plan and therefore they will be harder competition, but it will be another great test for us again.”
