There were some thrilling contests in the Football NSW Waratah Cup on Wednesday night, with six of the eight quarter-finalists now confirmed.
A goal to Nathan Sim in the last minute of extra-time has seen Manly United seal a dramatic 2-1 win over Bonnyrigg White Eagles in the Waratah Cup, but Sans Souci’s giant-killing run has come to an end.
In a huge Wednesday night of matches the most thrilling climax came at Bonnyrigg Sports Club where Manly pulled off a shock at the death.
The tense contest looked headed for penalties after David Vrankovic’s 55th minute equaliser for the White Eagles cancelled out Scott Balderson’s first-half opener.
Alex Canak then missed a penalty for the home side with just five minutes left in regulation time which could have settled the outcome before Sim made himself a hero at the death.
Manly’s stirring victory has the club just one win away from a berth in the inaugural FFA Cup.
Sans Souci’s fairytale run came to an end at Peakhurst Park, going down 3-0 to NPL NSW Mens 2 outfit Northern Tigers.
The only association club remaining in the competition, the boys from St George were no match for the Tigers who surged to a 2-0 lead before the break thanks to goals from Liam McConaghy and Luke Dawson.
Brayden Cheng completed the rout with a clever strike three minutes from time to book a quarter-final clash with Manly.
In other results on Wednesday night, Blacktown City were too strong for Marconi Stallions winning 2-0, thanks to goals in each half from Matt Lewis and Travis Major.
It took penalties to separate South Coast Wolves and Sutherland Sharks after the sides were locked at 1-1 after 120 gripping minutes.
In the end the Wolves prevailed 4-3 on penalties to set up a quarter-final clash with Parramatta FC.
Parramatta cruised through with a 3-0 demolition of the Macarthur Rams thanks to a brace from Frank Martey and another goal to Daniel Rezo.
Wednesday’s winners join Sydney United 58 in the last eight after last season’s NPL champions disposed of Fraser Park 8-1 on Tuesday, with Sydney FC youngster Alec Urosevski and former Hyundai A-League star Kaz Patafta scoring braces.
The final two round of 16 matches of the Waratah Cup take place on Thursday night with Hakoah Sydney City hosting Granville Rage while St George head to Belmore to play Sydney Olympic.
Both matches kick-off at 7.30pm.
The four winners of the quarter final matches automatically move into the draw for the inaugural FFA Cup, while the four losing sides will play-off against each other for the remaining three positions from NSW.
