Western Sydney Wanderers Westfield W-League coach Steve Roche has named Heather Garriock as the Club Captain for the 2013/14 season.
One of Australia-s most decorated players, Garriock will wear the Captain-s armband in her first season playing with the Wanderers.
“It-s a massive honour to captain the Wanderers in my first season playing for the Club,” said Garriock.
“Being the captain of any side is a big honour and to do it with the Wanderers I-m very, very flattered.”
Boasting over 100 caps for the Matildas, Garriock was born and raised in Western Sydney and believes she is a perfect fit for the club.
“I grew up in Campbelltown, spent most of my life living there and I-m very proud to be from Western Sydney,” continued Garriock.
“I always get stick about it in the National Team but it-s where I-m from, where I grew up and it-s made me the player I am.
“Growing up around here we didn-t get given things on a platter, you need to work hard and fight for your position – I-m really glad to be playing for Western Sydney.”
With this being her first season back since having a child, Garriock believes that her life experiences in her year away from football will make her a valuable asset to the Club and to her new teammates.
“My perspective on football has changed since having a family recently, I-m calmer than I used to be and know I-m a role model to the younger girls,” said Garriock.
“People think being captain is a big job whereas if you incorporate the rest of the players and get them to help you lead that-s the most important thing rather than putting the onus on one or two people.
“It-s about the team first and foremost – one of my attributes is I-m a winner and I lead by example with my work ethic and the girls respond to that.”
Having recruited well while retaining key players, the Wanderers squad is strong and Garriock believes the team will be pushing for the title.
“The ultimate goal is to win the Premiership; that-s everyone-s goal.
“Our first step is the game on the weekend. If we achieve our short term goals, the confidence will build and with the side we have we-ll kick-on from there.
“Our pre-season has been excellent with the support staff at the Wanderers and I-m just looking forward to going out there and playing after all this hard work so far.”
The Western Sydney Wanderers kick-off their Westfield W-League 2013/14 season against Adelaide United on Sunday 10 November at Marconi Stadium. Kick-off is 2pm followed the Foxtel National Youth League team playing Brisbane Roar at 4:10pm.
Members receive free entry with non-members $10 and $5 concession. Tickets are available from Club Marconi and at the gate.
