Melbourne Victory have enjoyed a comfortable 4-1 win over the Australian Institute of Sport in the Foxtel National Youth League at Lakeside Stadium on Sunday.
An early goal to Jimmy Jeggo followed by Andrew Nabbout-s double strike either side of half-time set the Victory on their way to three points.
Anthony Duzel scored the Victory’s fourth before the AIS pulled a goal back through Darcy Madden.
The AIS had a good share of possession throughout the match but lacked quality in their final third to fashion many quality chances.
With their direct style of play, the Victory looked dangerous on the counter as they looked to release both wide players down the channels at will.
After an early spell of AIS pressure, the Victory scored with their first chance as Jeggo lifted the ball over the onrushing keeper on five minutes after Nabbout’s defence-splitting through ball.
The AIS had a pair of chances soon after with Gonano’s header forcing a smart save from Victory keeper Keegan Coulter while Madden deflected the ball just wide from the six-yard box after a shot was driven in.
Some poor defending gifted the Victory their second in the 28th minute as the AIS defenders failed to clear Anthony Proia’s cross and Nabbout stepped up to slot the ball home.
There was a penalty shout on 40 minutes as AIS captain Anthony Kalik was bundled over in the area by James Karvelis but referee Patrick Chaplin deemed there was no foul.
AIS keeper Jordan Thurtell was brought into the action twice within minutes of half-time as Jesse Makarounas hit two quality free-kicks that were just tipped over the bar.
The Victory effectively ended the contest in the 58th minute as Proia and Nabbout combined again with the latter finishing clinically from close range.
Substitute Duzel added a fourth for the Victory after he smashed home fellow replacement Damien Miskulin’s pull back on 75 minutes.
The AIS did get a consolation goal three minutes later as Madden headed home from a corner after Coulter came for the ball and failed to make contact.
It is the AIS’s first loss of the season after winning against Newcastle in Round 1 last week while the Victory post their first win after a draw against Brisbane to open their campaign.
