Reds sign McGrath on short term deal

Adelaide United will head into the start of the Hyundai A-League 2013/14 Season with another new face after signing striker Brent McGrath on a short term contract.

The 22-year-old, who has spent the past seven years at Danish club Brondby, joins the Reds for an initial four week stint as an injury replacement for Bruce Djite who is recovering from an ankle injury.

However, Adelaide United General Manager – Football Operations, Michael Petrillo confirmed there is a view to possibly extending McGrath-s contract until the end of the season if things work out. If this was to eventuate, McGrath would fill the spot on the playing roster of Teeboy Kamara, who is currently on the long term injury list.

“Brent has impressed in the two pre season games he-s played and he has over 40 games of first team experience with one of the best clubs in Denmark,” Petrillo said.

“He-s only 22 years of age and can play as a centre forward or out wide so we think there is a lot of upside to him.”

McGrath, who started in the Reds- last two pre season matches against Melbourne Heart and Melbourne Victory, is delighted to have been given an opportunity and is ready to repay the faith the club has shown in him.

“It will be a good experience. They are a really good group of guys here, there-s a good coach, I feel like I fit in with the style of football the team plays and it-s a good chance to prove myself and hopefully extend my stay for longer,” McGrath said.

McGrath has made one appearance for the Socceroos when he came on as a late substitute in the 2-1 win over Germany back in 2011, while he holds the record as the youngest player to represent Australia-s U-17 team, having debuted at the age of 14.
