United legends coach young stars

The Hyundai A-League and English Premier League trophies stood side-by-side today on the Central Coast accompanied by another championship pairing in former Manchester United superstars Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole.

While Mariners fans may not have fond memories of Yorke, as the former Sydney FC marquee player set-up the goal that sunk their side in the inaugural Hyundai A-League grand final, the duo were warmly welcomed as they hosted a coaching clinic for young stars of the future.

Recalling his experience of playing in the Hyundai A-League, Yorke said he loved Australia and that the grand final win was an extremely memorable day in his career.

“It-s no secret that I love Australia, it-s a place very close to my heart. I have some fond memories from here and to deliver that (goal) was certainly something special and that will always remain with me,” said Yorke.

The striker, who scored 48 goals in 96 appearances for Manchester United went on to say he was looking forward to seeing his former side take on some of the best talent in the Hyundai A-League.

“I expect the game to be very competitive and it-s a game Man Utd wants to win.

“I-m sure the A-League wants to show the world that they can compete with the best teams in the world.”

Also casting his eye over the young talent that were being put through their paces by the strike pairing that delivered United their fabled treble in 1999 was Mariners coach Graham Arnold.

With tongue-in-cheek Arnold joked he had met Man United-s new manager David Moyes – and that he was as grumpy as he is.

The Central Coast boss was sure the Hyundai A-League All Stars would have their work cut out for them at the same time endorsing the concept that would see our domestic league promoted around the world.

“I-m sure that the All Stars will put on a good performance. They know they-re representing the A-League and Australian football.”

The Foxtel A-League All Stars will debut against Manchester United at ANZ Stadium, Sydney on 20 July with the match to be broadcast live and exclusive on the Seven Network nationally.
