Sydney FC has further bolstered its defence for the 2013/14 Hyundai A-League season by completing the signings of Championship winning defender Pedj Bojic and Brazilian centre half Tiago Calvano.
Bojic put pen to paper with the Sky Blues through to the end of the 2014/15 Hyundai A-League season after he was released from the Central Coast Mariners last month.
The 29-year-old returns to his hometown of Sydney after spending the last five years playing for the Central Coast and grew tired of the three-hour round trip from Sydney to Tuggerah for training every day.
“I-m really happy to be joining Sydney FC,” Bojic said. “I-m a Sydney boy and it feels right to be playing with Sydney FC. It feels like home. I can-t wait to start pre-season training and do whatever I can to get Sydney FC back to the top of the A-League, where it belongs.
“I enjoyed my time at the Mariners but I was commuting from Sydney every day and eventually it wore me down. I knew something needed to change. I-m really grateful to the Mariners for giving me a release and I-d like to thank the Club, the players and the fans for the last five years.”
Tiago returns to Sydney after playing nine games for the club as an injury replacement for Pascal Bosschaart at the end of last season.
The 32-year-old signed a one year deal after impressing during his short stint last term.
“I-m very happy to be returning to play for Sydney FC,” said the central defender. “I-m very much looking forward to the start of the season and think we can achieve a lot this year.”
The pair join Matt Jurman, Marc Warren and Nick Carle as additions to the Sydney FC squad for the 2013/14 season as coach Frank Farina sets about rebuilding the Sky Blues squad.
“We-re delighted Pedj and Tiago have joined Sydney FC,” said Head Coach Frank Farina. “There-s no hiding from the fact we needed to strengthen our defence and bringing them into the squad does that. Pedj is a quality defender, who also offers a lot going forward, and has been a critical part of a winning side for the last few years. Tiago showed me he has all the characteristics that this club needs to succeed during his short spell last year.”
“We-ve now added Pedj Bojic, Tiago Calvano, Marc Warren and Matt Jurman to our defence so we are starting to take shape well ahead of the season.”
