Joel Griffiths will reportedly link up with struggling Sydney FC in the New Year after more than four years in Asia.

Since his last A-League appearance in 2008, the former Newcastle Jets forward has enjoyed stints with Japanese outfit Avispa Fukuoka and Chinese clubs Beijing Guoan and Shanghai Shenhua.

But the 33-year-old looks set to return to Australia’s premier football competition via the January transfer window in a bid to assist the ailing Sky Blues, who find themselves rooted to the bottom of the table.

Media outlets in Australia indicate Griffiths will be officially unveiled by his new club at a media conference scheduled for Friday.

Griffiths told The World Game that he was excited by the impending transfer to Sydney but insisted he was not sure how long his next stint in the A-League would last.

“I am not sure how it will unfold because you never know in football. I could be here six months or three years,” Griffiths said.

“My wife is expecting our second our child in May and this is a good time to come home to test myself again.

“There were also offers in China but I feel I’m coming back into the competition at a great time, because it’s thriving right now.”

Griffiths played 60 A-League matches for the Jets between 2006 and 2009 for an impressive return of 28 goals.
