The Jets lost by means of a Besart Berisha penalty, and while the Roar may have felt hard done by over Thomas Broich’s seemingly soft red card, it was van Egmond who said his side were over penalised in the Hyundai A-League clash at Suncorp Stadium.
Van Egmond had no complaints about the penalty decision which ultimately cost his side the match, but he did question the yellow card count, which weighed heavily against his side.
Despite the home side committing 14 fouls to 10, the Jets were on the receiving end of multiple bookings from referee Brenton Hayward, while no Roar player was given a caution.
“We got seven yellow cards, they didn’t get one yellow,” van Egmond said.
“I’m just going to leave it at that.”
Van Egmond also drew attention to the fact several Roar players, most notably Erik Paartalu, aggressively entered the first-half melee which resulted in two dismissals, but their actions were not deemed to have warranted bookings.
Both sides were forced to play the second half with 10 men, after Broich and Newcastle’s Josh Mitchell were sent off after their confrontation just before the break. Mitchell received a second yellow card for pushing over Broich after the Brisbane midfielder had body-checked him as he advanced out of defence.
Broich was given straight red, when it appeared his teammaate Erik Paartalu had acted more aggressively, leading the charge of players who angrily confronted Mitchell.
When asked about the incident, van Egmond said he did not have a clear view, however he questioned why only some players were booked.
“I didn’t see it, I just saw players running in,” he said.
“But I did find it strange that certain people didn’t warrant a yellow card or what have you.”
Van Egmond was pleased with his side’s overall showing, despite the narrow loss.
“I think it was pretty close to one of our best performances,” he said.
“The second half was one-way traffic, so I’m quite happy.”
