Kosmina plays down radiant Reds

Adelaide United coach John Kosmina has channelled NRL counterpart Des Hasler in declaring the Hyundai A-League leaders are still flying under the radar despite an impressive start to the season.

The Reds went four points clear at the head of the ladder following a thrilling 2-1 win over Sydney FC on Friday night, but the Reds boss was reluctant to talk up his team’s prospects.

Like Bulldogs coach Hasler, who is renowned for using the phrase ‘under the radar’ to describe his side’s standing, Kosmina preferred to pump up his rivals.

“I think Central Coast are still the team to beat. Brisbane are still a team to beat. Melbourne Victory are the team to beat,” Kosmina declared.

“It’s easier to fly under the radar.

“We’re travelling okay but we can’t ever afford to get too complacent about it.

“We’re probably not even halfway there yet. I think we’ve got a lot further to go.”

Adelaide were too quick and creative for large parts of Friday’s match but still found themselves locked at 1-1 heading into the final two minutes.

It took Dario Vidosic’s late strike to deliver the visitors all three points.

“We got ourselves in a bit of trouble, we started to rush things … even in the first half when we were comfortable we stopped knocking the ball around and tried to force the pace,” Kosmina said.

“We let Sydney back in the game and it became a game of transition.

“They (Sydney) were always threatening, they’re a good side and (Alessandro) Del Piero is clever, he can always hurt you.

“Our guys showed a lot of character, a stack of character to stay alive in the game and score the winner like we did.”
