The Central Coast Mariners’ National Youth League Team emulated the feats of the senior side on Sunday, beating Sydney FC in a goalfest – this time a 4-2 win at the Tuggerah Centre of Excellence.
Touches of class from a quartet of experienced Hyundai A-League players helped the Mariners maintain their 100 percent record after three games.
The Mariners featured Oliver Bozanic, Adam Kwasnik, Brad McDonald and Adriano Pellegrino as their key overage players in the fixture and the gulf in class showed against Brian Dene’s side.
An enthusiastic Mariners outfit opened the scoring in the third minute when a rushed clearance from Sydney FC goalkeeper Anthony Bouzanis fell to Kwasnik, who fed Bozanic and the midfielder finished with precision.
On 25 minutes a corner from Pellegrino was nodded home by an unmarked Kwasnik.
Up to that point in the match Sydney FC had been lacklustre but a piece of individual brilliance from skipper Peter Triantis a minute after the Mariners second goal pulled one back for the visitors.
Midfielder Triantis weaved through the middle of the Mariners defence and rifled a shot past Central Coast shot-stopper Luke Turnbull.
Sydney FC were dealt a cruel blow in the 45th minute when they conceded an own goal. The Mariners switched the point of attack to the right hand wing and a cross from Kieren Paull found its way into the net off Sydney FC’s Aaron Calver.
Calver had gone off briefly earlier in the half with an injury and his return would not have been what he had hoped for.
John McLafferty’s men made it 4-1 when Kwasnik notched his second goal, after a neat ball from Anthony Caceres, to open then second-half scoring in the 56th minute.
The only major second-half blip for the home side was when Aaron Peterson gave away a penalty which lead to the second goal for Dene’s side. The attempt was coolly slotted home by Triantis in the 72nd minute.
Mariners substitute Dillon Vorster produced the best chance late on for a goal but he miscued a right foot shot in the 82nd minute and Sydney FC failed to bridge the gap.
