Covic Victory’s best player

Melbourne Victory goalkeeper Ante Covic was named the club’s player of the year at the Victory Medal awards night at Crown Casino on Friday.

Melbourne Victory goalkeeper Ante Covic was named the club’s player of the year at the Victory Medal awards night at Crown Casino on Friday.

The 36-year-old Covic made 24 league appearances for Victory in his first season at the club and claimed 20 votes in the count.

He finished just ahead of Harry Kewell (18 votes), with Archie Thompson and Fabio (14 votes) equal third.

Covic’s outstanding season was also recognised by his peers as he won the players’ player of the year award, while now-departed defender Rodrigo Vargas was announced as the clubman of the year.

With 10 goals from his 22 A-League appearances, Costa Rican Carlos Hernandez won the golden boot ahead of Kewell (eight goals) and Thompson (seven goals).

Midfielder James Jeggo collected the Victory Youth Medal for the most outstanding player in the club’s National Youth League team, and he also won the young player of the year award.

Also collecting awards on the night were Kendall Fletcher, Danielle Johnson and Brianna Davey.

Fletcher was awarded the Victory Women Medal for her performances in the W-League, Johnson won the players’ player of the year and Davey was selected as the young player of the year.
