Originally scheduled for Sunday, United’s crunch clash with Perth Glory at Hindmarsh Stadium has been brought forward to this Thursday evening. So mark it in your diary and get ready for exhilarating Hyundai A-League action under the lights.
While United might not sneak into the top six this season, they will, as always, keep on giving it their absolute all for their incredible Red Army, so be there on Thursday and experience cracking entertainment live!
Last week’s 1-0 loss to Newcastle was a bitter pill to swallow for United, as they knew how important the points were if they wanted to push themselves towards the finals places, but Tarek Elrich’s goal just before the break proved to be the difference between the teams and, despite a spirited second-half display, the Reds couldn’t find their way back into the match. They’ll be looking for the same effort levels, but with a final product, on Thursday night.
Not only will United be aiming for three points to help them move away from the wrong end of the ladder, but they will be keen to reap some revenge on a team that has dominated the two fixtures between the sides in the Hyundai A-League 2011/12 season. In an opening weekend match which saw seven new faces in the Adelaide starting-side, Billy Mehmet-s second-half goal was enough to separate the sides.
Things got even worse later in the season, as the West Australians destroyed United at Hindmarsh Stadium. A fine first-half finish from Shane Smeltz and a Steven McGarry goal gave Ian Ferguson’s men a 2-0 half-time lead, before Liam Miller sealed the points with his first goal for the club late on.
Perth Glory will be hoping for a reprisal of either of those displays as they aim to bounce back after a miserable Saturday night at nib Stadium. In what was their biggest game of the Hyundai A-League season so far, they blew the chance to make a serious bid for second place with a 3-0 defeat against rivals Brisbane Roar. After Henrique had scored in the opening stanza, two neat finishes from Besart Berisha in four second-half minutes ended any real hopes of a top two spot for Perth.
While it was only Glory’s second loss in their last 11 matches, they will be a little concerned that it is also their second defeat in the last three games. Although they are still looking very likely to finish in the top six, they’ll need to cut out these losses if they are to gain elimination final home advantage.
