Sydney FC overturned an early deficit to overrun a gallant Adelaide United 4-1, while champions Brisbane Roar were made to work far harder before subduing Melbourne Victory with a 1-0 score line.
The heavyweight duo moved five points shy of leaders Canberra United with the team from the nation-s capital meeting the Roar next weekend in what is shaping as a blockbuster in Brisbane.
Saturday-s Week 6 meeting between Newcastle Jets and Perth Glory was postponed following the foul weather which blighted the east coast over the past week and will be replayed at a later date.
Brisbane Roar were forced to battle until the last minute at home to collect all three points against Melbourne Victory. It was the third single-goal loss of the season for the Victory as the visitors displayed a level of resilience that is fast becoming one of their hallmarks.
The Roar perhaps had the better of the first half with Tameka Butt and, later Joanne Burgess, coming close to adding to the scoreline. It was the Victory however that had the best opening with American import Danielle Johnson striking the frame of the goal with her effort.
However it was to be Roar substitute Emily Gielnik who settled the contest, with a goal two minutes after the restart. Gielnik, on for Ashley Spina who unfortunately became the latest player to suffer a ruptured knee ligament, hunted down a long ball and prodded home comfortably.
The Victory though finished the match powerfully as the home side clung to their single goal margin.
It was a different scenario in Adelaide as victors Sydney FC ended the game in strong fashion against cellar dwellers United. The home side started brightly and Mariana Rajcic-s clever chip on the half hour would have left the Lady Reds momentarily dreaming of their first points of the campaign.
However, Sydney were not to be denied and were in front by the interval as Heather Garriock scored with an impressive finish, while Servet Uzunlar got on the scoresheet after goalkeeper Sian McLaren failed to cleanly collect her cross.
The second half didn-t get any better for the United shotstopper who could only direct Leena Khamis- corner into the goal, before spilling Caitlin Foord-s effort, which narrowly went over the line. Foord, following up her midweek AFC Young Player of the Year award in Kuala Lumpur, turned in a typically high energy second half cameo.
The result was never in doubt once the third goal went in just past the midway mark of the second half, and the Sky Blues could even afford a second half penalty miss from the usually reliable Kylie Ledbrook.
