Michael Bridges gives his opinion on this week’s A-League signings…
With a distinguished playing career in Australia and abroad already under his belt, recently retired Jets captain Michael Bridges is enjoying his new position as the Jets International Football and Business Development Manager.
But like many A-League fans, Bridges is buoyed by this week-s announcements that will see good mate, Harry Kewell and star recruit, Brett Emerton joining the Australian competition.
“The decision by Harry Kewell and Brett Emerton to join the A-League is great for Australian football. It will make the competition stronger and put Australia on the international football map,” Bridges said.
After playing with Kewell for five years, Bridges believes he will raise the standard of the competition, bringing his elite skills and instincts to Melbourne Victory. He believes Kewell will rapidly establish himself as a strong and driving force within the team.
“He has great skill and the ability to score goals, create goals and bring people into the game,” said Bridges.
Meanwhile, Emerton, who recently left the Premier League to return to the A-League arena can definitely be seen to be giving something back to the competition according to Bridges. With Premier League experience and fitness levels to match his athletic ability, Emerton is destined to be a strong competitor within the competition and a key player in Sydney FC-s 2011/2012 A-League campaign.
“He has an incredible ability to cross the ball and a never give up attitude,” Bridges said.
As for Bridges himself, he is enjoying his new role as the Jets International Football and Business Development Manager. Although very different from his professional playing days, he is using his ability and knowledge to get local children involved in football. He says the role allows time to split his duties between the office and the field.
“It-s new to be working in an office but I-m enjoying it, working to make Newcastle professional and proud,” he said.
Bridges plans to instigate training clinics to entice more participation from local children and parents. He hopes to increase the knowledge and ability of children in the region and pass on some of the wisdom he has learnt throughout his career, hopefully creating some great players and future Jets.
