Johnny Warren Medallist Marcos Flores’ philosophy is dare to dream after the Argentine maestro took home the A-League’s most prestigious honour after an outstanding season with Adelaide United.
The passionate South American finished the campaign with eight goals and as many assists in his 27 appearances as he continually showcased his brilliant skills, creative flair and sublime repertoire of killer passes.
The 25 year-old paid tribute to everyone at Adelaide United and said he wanted to share the remarkable achievement with his young fans who he implored to ‘push on’ and ‘follow their dreams.’
Flores joked he had only attended the awards night in Sydney for the food, such were his expectations, but admitted it was a beautiful surprise when he was announced as the recipient of the A-League’s highest honour.
“It is a very big surprise, honestly,” he said.
“I went to Sydney to enjoy the food and experience with my club and my team-mate. When they called my name I was so surprised, but it was a beautiful surprise.”
“It was a beautiful surprise, a beautiful night for me and for the club because it’s not just about one name or one player. It’s about the club and the effort and all my team-mates. Everyone works hard at the club and I don’t want to forget anyone.”
“It’s the day where I want to say nothing is impossible. If you dream, you can do it. You have to push and you have to follow your dream. I want to share with all the kids in South Australia that are dreaming to become soccer players.”
Speculation is high about the Argentine’s future with the Reds reportedly fielding offers from US Major League club Portland Timbers.
Flores admitted he would consider all offers but is in no rush to make a decision on his immediate future.
The playmaker remains contracted to the Reds for another year and said ideally he would love to remain in Adelaide.
“My contract says I have another year. But, this is a decision a lot of people are involved in. If it were up to me, I’d like to live in Adelaide,” he said.
“Every player in this world wants to improve and every player has ambition. I would like to listen (to other offers) but I have to respect this club.”
“This club has given me a big chance to show my football in Australia. Now, I’m just waiting. But, I’m here and this moment I want to try and live for today and not think about the future because I will make a mistake if I think in the future.”
But more important than where he will be playing football next season Flores said, was a trip back home.
The Reds no. 10 admitted he was excited to be catching up with his family and friends in Argentina who are all extremely proud their son, brother and friend.
Flores also extended endless gratitude to his huge adoring fan base in Adelaide.
“I’m more worried if my mum calls me not other clubs,” he said.
“I spoke a lot to her but she didn’t say anything, she just cried. But, of course she’s is really happy and really proud. I just want to go back to my country and catch up with my family and catch my people. They wished this night for me.”
“I’m so happy to receive on my phone a hundred text messages saying congratulations from my friends and my family. I want to relax, catch up with my Australian family here, they’ve helped me a lot, my Australian friends. I want to hug every supporter as well.”
