Will the goals continue to flow for United at Skilled Park? This terrific tangle for a top two spot is simply not to be missed!
Just lately, the goals have been flowing at Skilled Park, and The Beach will be hoping that they continue to do so as Adelaide United make up the opponents in what is set to be a blockbusting battle on Wednesday night. It-s a midweek match-up that will undoubtedly define the remainder of the season for these two teams, so fill Skilled Park with the kind of colour and non-stop noise that will undoubtedly make a huge difference to the outcome.
If the last two occasions that United have played in front of their home faithful are anything to go by, there will be non-stop entertainment and plenty of reasons for fans to be cheerful. After a 4-0 drubbing of state rivals North Queensland Fury, United kept themselves in the hunt for a top-two finish with a brilliant 5-1 win over Newcastle Jets in front of a record crowd at Skilled Park.
Boosted by the return of talismanic striker Shane Smeltz and the form of Bruce Djite, United tore Jets to shreds in front of 14,738 delirious fans. Djite‘s hat-trick was especially impressive and he-ll need to be on similar form if his side are to finally overcome Adelaide in the Hyundai A-League 2010/11 season and pick up only their second ever win against the side from South Australia.
The last time the teams met, it was the Reds who were victorious. At Hindmarsh Stadium, the home side ended Gold Coast United-s 11-game unbeaten run with a fine 2-1 win thanks to goals from Paul Reid and Travis Dodd either side of the break. It was Adelaide-s sixth home triumph in a row but it could have been very different.
Bas van den Brink drew the Gold Coast level on the stroke of half time with a wonderful goal and the visitors looked set to cause the Reds more problems until James Brown was given his marching orders with half-an-hour remaining. It was Adelaide-s first ever and only win against The Gold Coast.
Earlier in the season, the two sides played out a drab 0-0 draw at Skilled Park. Considering how the goals have been flying in from all angles in front of The Beach recently, not the mention the fact that Adelaide United hit eight goals, and there seems absolutely no chance of a repeat of that scoreless stalemate.
Quite the opposite, this is set to be a cracker of a game that will no doubt have a huge impact on the final three weeks of the Hyundai A-League 2010/11 season, not just in terms of league positions, but for the two teams- morale as they reach the business end of things.
It-s been a fantastic campaign for both clubs so far, but now is where it really counts. The six-pointers are coming thick and fast, so get along to Skilled Park and sing your side to a massive victory!
