Brisbane captain Matt McKay says there is no limit to what the Roar can achieve this season after a last-minute goal saw Roar preserve their record winning streak with a 3-3 draw against Melbourne on Friday night.
Brisbane have now gone 15 games without a defeat thanks to McKay’s 93rd-minute equaliser which proved again that a team in form is usually also a team in luck.
Despite holding a seven-point lead on top of the table, coach Ange Postecoglou refuses to put defined season goals in front of his players and that suits McKay fine.
“There’s no limit on what we can achieve this season. We just keep going. We’re told each week that performance is what (Postecoglou) wants out of us and that’s what we do, we work hard,” he said.
“Everyone dreams of championships and Michael Theoklitos tells us how he won two championships at the Victory and everyone wants to do that, so obviously that’s something we want to achieve, but we haven’t talked about that in the dressing room.”
With so much momentum behind his team after an incredible run which has far exceeded anything ever achieved in the Hyundai A-League, Postecoglou said the focus remains on the performance from week- to-week.
“The thing for us is that we haven’t really spoken about what we want to achieve this year. It’s not a secret, but we haven’t talked about it,” the coach said. “For me it’s about the football we play.”
“We want to play well in every game between now and the rest of the year and we’ll see how far that takes us.”
“I haven’t put any limits on this group. Let’s see how far we go, who knows? We’ve said there’s a game on next week, we want to play well and see how far that takes us.”
Postecoglou felt the Roar’s second half against Melbourne was well below the high standard they had set themselves this season. After establishing a 2-0 lead in the first half, Brisbane found themselves behind after three Melbourne goals in the space of 14 minutes.
But the coach said the fact they were able to dig deep and find that extra goal through McKay was a sign of the spirit there was in his team.
“We see today a result borne out our spirit rather than our performance. What we’ve been about this year is performance and most of our wins have come out of performance. Today it was purely based on spirit that we can get back into the game,” he said.
Postecoglou confirmed both Milan Susak and Mitch Nichols had suffered minor injuries during the game but both are expected to be fit to play in the Roar’s next fixture against Sydney at the SFS on Sunday week.
