The Brisbane Roar won its pre-season match against the Newcastle Jets 1-0 on Sunday at Port Macquarie Regional Stadium.

A late penalty taken by Ivan Franjic was required to split the two teams, with the Jets losing their fourth game in as many visits to the area.

The Jets almost broke through on 10 minutes, via Iraqi Ali Abbas, but his right-foot strike went right of the target.

Former Phoenix striker Costa Barbarouses was threatening for the Roar, forcing a good save from Jets keeper Ben Kennedy early.

The Jets had a golden chance to open the scoring on 52 minutes, when Kasey Wehrman put a neat through-ball for Sean Rooney, who in turn squared it for Jobe Wheelhouse, only to be denied by Victory premiership keeper and new Roar stopper Michael Theoklitos.

Late in the game, German midfielder Thomas Broich danced into the box before being clipped from behind, and Franjic sent Paul Henderson the wrong way to seal victory for Brisbane.
