Melbourne’s new Hyundai A-League franchise has confirmed that Adelaide United’s Kristian Sarkies and Newcastle captain Matt Thompson have become the first signings for the new club.
The pair, who each have five years’ experience in the Hyundai A-League, have signed multi-year deals to join the club, provisionally known as the Melbourne Heart, which will become part of the competition from next season
For head coach John van ‘t Schip, it represents a huge milestone for the club and he is delighted with the quality of players he has signed.
“I am excited that Kristian and Matt have joined me at the club. Both players are technically excellent, great professionals and moving toward the peak of their careers,” he said.
“We need players who are very comfortable on the ball but also players who are prepared to work hard in transition and when not in possession. I have watched both players closely and they have these qualities.”
Both players have experienced Hyundai A-League championships, with Sarkies scoring a goal in Melbourne Victory’s Grand Final win in 2007 and Thompson a part of Newcastle’s success in 2008.
Both players have also represented the Qantas Socceroos with Sarkies making his debut prior to the 2006 World Cup in a match against Liechtenstein, while Thompson played against Indonesia and Kuwait earlier this year.
Sarkies said the move was an important one from a personal and professional point of view.
“That was a bit of icing on the cake going back there (to Melbourne) because my family is there, but it was mostly a football decision for me personally,” Sarkies said.
“Adelaide has been superb for me, since the day I got here they have really looked after me on and off the park, and it has been a pleasure to be here. I’ve experienced a lot of good things while I’ve been here, we made the Asian Champions League Final, we made a Hyundai A-League Grand Final and I-ve really enjoyed my time here.”
“But all good things must come to an end, and I’ve decided to go back to Melbourne next season.”
“I’ve learnt a lot as a footballer and a person. You have your ups and downs but it’s what you do during your downs that make you stronger when you’re up, so it has been a rollercoaster time here but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it and learnt a lot.”
Meanwhile, Sydney FC has released a statement refuting speculation that Simon Colosimo has signed for the Heart.
“I have not signed a contract with Melbourne Heart. I have put all contract talk on hold until the end of the season,” Colosimo said.
“My focus is firmly on the field and I am really enjoying my football at Sydney FC and am aiming to win a championship with the club.”
