With the FIFA Match Day break this week, Adelaide United have just under a fortnight to recapture their early-season form and improve on a horror last fortnight which has yielded no wins and one goal from three matches.
Defender Scott Jamieson knows positive results have been too few and far between lately and he believes there is no special formula to their dry goal scoring spell, but that it just comes back to good old fashioned hard work.
“The table doesn’t lie. It reads we’re eighth and it’s not good enough,” the 21 year old said.
“For me it’s a big change going from last year where we were near the top, now down to the bottom, it’s a different feeling and a different atmosphere, so it’s something we have to adapt to and quickly fix because we feel we’re a better team than the table shows.”
“I think (the results will come) with persistence and hard work. We can’t do enough work on the training field, we’ve got to keep working hard on it and once we keep on doing that, there’s no excuses and we can go from there.”
Despite United’s unfamiliar position, which has come about largely to the Reds having only picked up full points at home three times from eight games at Hindmarsh, Jamieson says the group knows it has underperformed so far, but that there is still a united commitment to the cause.
“Everyone knows what position we’re in, we know we’re coming near the bottom but there is no crisis, no division in the change room or anything like that, we’re all together, we want to work together and enough work on the training paddock will hopefully see our results start to change,” Jamieson said.
“As a collective team unit, we know we haven’t been doing enough. It’s not down to lack of trying or anything like that, the effort is there, it’s just not coming off and we need to keep trying harder.”
With only 10 points separating all ten teams on the table and still 13 games to go, Jamieson is confident United can put in a strong run home and put themselves back in familiar territory – near the top of the table.
“I believe so. The table is very close and if we can win two games in a row, we jump right back into finals contention near the top. It’s a very close league, it’s just about really getting our performances and our goals together,” Jamieson said.
